New Cayama, California
New Cuyama Airport, California.
New Cuyama Airport (L88) was a popular first solo cross country destinations for a number of Southern California flight schools. The locals pronounce this as ‘KWE yama’.
This is a great airport with a $100 hamburger.
Airport in the Sky
Another popular Southern California destination is the ‘Airport in the sky’ at Catalina Island, (KAVX). This used to be a private airport owned by the Wrigley family who once owned the island. It is now open, but has a landing fee. Catalina airport has an approach that can be scary if you are unaware of the airport layout. The runway is 3,000 feet long and 1,602 feet ASL, and a lot of the approach is over the ocean with a pattern altitude of 2,600 feet.
This is what the approach looks like. Note that once on the ground there is a crown in the runway and you can not see the far end until you get to mid-field. Pilots of some high performance aircraft opt to abort and go around before they reach mid-field as they think they are running out of runway.
